Krabi (ca. 25,000 citizens) lies 500mi South of Bangkok at the Andaman Sea. This city is known for having beautiful nature, sea and beaches in the area. Krabi's history dates back to ca. 35,000 BC. Krabi is also often used as a base for excursions to, for example, Koh Phi Phi. In addition, this area is very popular with climbers because of the many limestone rocks in the region. Also for sun, sea and beach holidays, this is a good location. The area of Krabi has many beautiful beaches and clear sea, where you can go Snorkeling or scuba diving.

Koh Phi Phi

At about 25mi from Krabi and 30mi from Phuket lie the islands of Koh Phi Phi. This park covers about 100,000 acres. The only inhabited island of the park is Koh Phi Phi Don. The island of Koh Phi Phi Leh is probably the most famous. This island is in fact used in the movie "The Beach". In particular, Maya Bay is used for this movie.
Khao Kanab Nam

At about 15 minutes by boat from Krabi lies Khao Kanab Nam. These two limestone rocks are approximately 330ft high and form a natural gateway to Krabi. In these rocks are caves where human remains in the form of skeletons have been found. A staircase leads to the top where you can sit and enjoy lovely views. A boattrip to this location costs about 300 THB.
Wat Phra Kaew

The Wat Phra Kaew temple can be found at just 1,000yd from the center. This is the main temple in Krabi for the local Thai. The complex consists of 19th and 20th century buildings, most of these are plain white.
Wat Tham Sua

The Wat Tham Sua Temple is located just outside of Krabi and is also known as Tiger Cave Temple (not to be confused with the Tiger Temple in Kanchanaburi). To reach this temple you have take a stair. The staircase has over 1,200 steps. You can enjoy a 360 degree view of the area. At the top are a number of Buddha statues and a separate part is in Hindu style. On a clear day it is even possible to see part of Koh Phi Phi.

The Ao Nang beach near Krabi is perhaps the most popular beach in the region. The beach is accessible by road. Since the 90s, this beach has become increasingly popular with tourists. More and more hotels and resorts have been added since at the cost of the peacefull surroudings. At this beach you can snorkel and it is possible to book excursions to Koh Phi Phi.
In the region of Krabi and Koh Phi Phi are several good dive locations like King Cruiser and Koh Ha. November to April are the best months to go diving in this region. Outside this period it's possible to dive, however the visibility is less and the sea is rougher. It will rarely happen that diving excursions are canceled. During the months of May to August it might be better to go diving at Koh Samui, Koh Phangan or Koh Tao.
In the region of Krabi are several good climbing sites such as the island of Railay. Most locations consist of limestone rocks. The locations of these rocks are often at or in the sea making it a beautiful experience. Each year a climbing event takes place in this area. This region is also seen as the best location to go climbing of Thailand.
Entertainment and Nightlife
During the main season are plenty of dining options. There are two night markets with lots of stalls where you can eat traditional Thai food for favorable rates. Often there aren't any menus, you just point at what you want to eat. If you are not a fan of Thai food, there are several restaurants with western cuisines. However outside the main season many restaurants are closed.
In the tourist area and the center of Krabi are several places pretty lively at night. The nightlife here however can't be compared with Bangkok, Phuket or Pattaya. In several barsyou can see live (cover) bands.
How to get there
You can get to Krabi in various ways. The most commonly used forms are by plane, boat and bus.
From Bangkok, Koh Samui, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore it's possible to have a direct flight to Krabi. The airlines most used are: Air Asia, Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways. The flights to and from Bangkok operate daily.
Boats from Koh Phi Phi to Krabi arrive and depart daily. These boats leave from a pier, about 3mi from the center of Krabi. Quite often the taxiride to the pier is included in the price of the boat ticket. A ticket for the boat costs about 600 THB. The crossing takes about 1.5 to 2 hours .
Krabi can be reached by bus from Phuket and Bangkok. The bus from Phuket departs several times a day. The journey takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. The bus drives from the airport in Phuket to the airport in Krabi. The cost of a ticket is about 150 THB. From Bangkok there are daily buses to Krabi. It is advisable to book the VIP bus as the journey takes approximately 12 hours. The cost of a ticket is around 900 THB.
In Krabi it's possible to stay for every budget
The prices for low budget start at around 150 THB and go up to 500 THB per night. For these amounts you'll have the basic requirements. Sometimes you have to share the bathroom with other guests.
If you have a slightly larger budget, you can get some comfort for 500 - 1,000 THB in Krabi. For these amounts you're in a well-maintained guesthouse or motel. These rooms often have air conditioning, private bathroom and a mini fridge.
If you want luxury and comfort in Krabi than the prices start at 1,200 THB and can really go up. In these accommodations, you'll get all the luxury you desire. The complexes often have restaurants, swimming pools and spas. The rooms are very luxurious and fully equipped.
