La Palma is a volcanic island with a surface of approximately 280 sq mi. The island has a population of approximately 85,000, of which a quarter lives in the capital Santa Cruz de la Palma, also known as La Palma. In contradiction to the other islands of the Canary Islands La Palma isn’t very touristic. The island is mainly visited by nature enthusiasts. La Palma is also known as La Isla Verde which means The Green Island or Isla Bonita which means the most beautiful island. You also don’t have to expect a vibrant nightlife and beach parties etc. What La Palma does offer are many sights and tourist attractions as for example Puerto Naos, Los Tilos and La Zarza.

Santa Cruz de la Palma

Santa Cruz de la Palma is the capital of La Palma and is located on the Eastern part of the island. It is a characteristic town with narrow picturesque streets and colorful fronts and balconies. Scattered through Santa Cruz de la Palma are many squares with nice small bars and terraces. The most known sight and tourist attraction in this town is the replica of the ship of Columbus at the Plaza de la Alameda. This ship is also a maritime museum. In addition, all through Santa Cruz de la Palma you will find old beautiful buildings. At the harbor cruiseships let their passengers ashore so they can enjoy Sante Cruz de la Palma for a day.

The surrounding waters of La Palma are a good place to dive. It is a special experience because the seabed has been created by volcanic activity. Therefor there are many plants, landscapes and other kind of sealife to be seen. On the island are several diveschools where you can take lessons, rent equipment or book excursions.

Walking
La Palma is especially a popular destination amongst walkers. The beautiful nature and landscapes with perfect walking routes makes it ideal for people who love to walk. On the routes you will visit several viewpoints which offer beautiful views on La Palma. These viewpoints are ideal to rest for a while or have a picnic.

Entertainment and Nightlife

La Palma isn’t known for its vibrant nightlife. There is one location where you will find several bars and clubs and this is in Los Llanos de Aridane. In the other places on the island you will find some bars but you can’t say it’s a vibrant nightlife. During the main season you will find many places where live bands perform at squares and bars.

How to get there

Plane
It is almost impossible to reach La Palma with a direct flight. When you visit La Palma in most cases you have to transfer on Tenerife or Gran Canaria.

Boat
From the other islands of the Canary Islands La Palma can be reached easily by boat. There are 2 operators which offer daily transfers between the islands. These operators are Fred Olsen and Armas. In general the boats which they use are well maintained and comfortable.

Stay

On La Palma it is possible to find an accommodation for each budget. From luxurious resorts to cheap and basic guesthouses and homestays. Especially in the touristic areas it is possible to stay at the most luxurious hotels and resorts which are equipped with all the luxury and comfort you wish. Besides these kind of accommodations it is also possible to camp at some designated locations on La Palma.

So before you go camping make sure you are allowed to camp at that specific location.
