Fuerteventura is volcanic island with a surface of approximately 650 sq mi, which makes it the second largest island of the Canary Islands after Tenerife. The island has a population of approximately 105,000. Fuerteventura is divided in 6 counties and the capital is Puerto del Rosario. Fuerteventura gives a dry and arid impression. The dunes are created by sand which has been blown over from the Sahara. Fuerteventura is very popular amongst tourists who are looking for rest, sun, beaches and sea. Besides those people Fuerteventura is also very popular amongst kite- and wind surfers. Especially the white beaches of Corralejo in the North of Fuerteventura are popular. Offcourse the island has more than enough sights and tourist attractions which you can visit during your stay. A few examples are Los Lobos, El Cotillo and Betancuria. .

Corralejo

The white beaches of Corralejo in the North of Fuerteventura are very beautiful and are part of a natural preservation. From the long beach of Corralejo you have a nice view on the island Lobos. The constant winds make Corralejo very popular amongst kite- and windsurfers. Besides the gorgous beach Corralejo has a beautiful old center and harbor which makes it worthwhile. At the harbor you can book trips to the surroundings of Corralejo.

Cueva del Llano

Cueva del Llano is located in the Northern part of Fuerteventura near Villaverde. This ancient cave is partly used as a museum. The museum Cueva del Llano is a hallway of 0.25 mile with a width varying from 7 yd to 11 yd. The museum has different themes including the geology of Fuerteventura, Volcanos on Fuerteventura and the underground life.

North of Fuerteventura is the 2 sq mi island Los Lobos. The name Los Lobos means seals. On this island is the park Park Natural del islote de Lobos. El Cotillo

El Cotillo is an old harbor town on the Northwestern part of Fuerteventura. This used to be the main export harbor of Fuertventura. Pico de la Zarza

Pico de la Zarza is located on the Southern part of Fuerteventura near de city of Morro Jable in the parc National de Jandia. The 5 hour journey to the 0.5 mi high top of the Pico de la Zarza starts at Morro Jable. The first part of the journey is quite steep for approximately 60 minutes and then for 2 hours it gets a bit less steep to get steep again for the last part. During your walk you will pass several viewpoints with beautiful views. When you have reached the top of Pico de la Zarza you have a beautiful view on several locations including the beach of Cofete.

Poblado de La Atalayita

Poblado de la Atalayita is located on the Southern part of Fuerteventura. Poblado de la Atalayita is the largest archeological site of Fuerteventura with approximately 110 ancient houses and buildings in area of approximately 48,000 sq yd. From 1950 to 1977 the most archeological findings were made. During these exhumations different kinds of objects were found as for example pottery, bones and tools which were used. There is no admission charge for Poblado de la Atalayita.

Betancuria

Location : 17 mi from Puerto del Rosario - 30 minutes | Category : Culture, sea and beach

Betancuria is the old capital of Fuerteventura. In the center of Betancuria you will find old buildings. A few of these buildings are the church Santa Maria, couple of old houses and palaces. The old houses have characteristic balconies. The church Santa Maria at the center of Betancuria has no admission fee and it is even possible to get a tour.

Activities

Fuerteventura is loved by people who visit the island for the sun, sea and beach. However Fuerteventura also offers many kind of activities as mentioned below.

Watersports
Because of the constant wind on the island Fueteventura is loved by kite sufers, wind surfers and sailors. In all the mayor touristic locations you will find schools for surfing where you can also rent equipment. If you are a beginning surfer the best place to go to is the East coast of Fuerteventura. The more advanced surfer will have to go to the West coast of Fuerteventura.

Diving
Fuerteventura has a high watertemperture and the water is clear which makes it an ideal location for diving. At the popular touristic locations on the island you will find dive schools where you can take lesson, rent equipment and book excursions to for example Caleta de Fuste and El Rio.

Walking / hiking
Walking is a good way to explore the nature on Fuerteventura. There are many routes all over Fuerteventura. For example you can walk in the Parque National de Jandia or hike and climb to the top of Pica la Zarza. Besides those, the many characteristic villages on the island are ideal for walking.

Golf
Fuerteventura has 2 18-holes golfcourses named Fuerteventura Golfclub and Golf Club Salinas de Antigua. At these golfcourses it is possible to rent the necessary equipment. The golfcourses on Fuerteventura are located in beautiful surroundings.

Entertainment and Nightlife

Fuerteventura doesn’t have a really vibrant nightlife. The best locations to go to are Jandia and the boulevard of Corralejo. At these 2 places are the most bars and discos. At the other places on Fuerteventura the nightlife mainly consists of small bars and are the hotels the main locations for entertainment in the evening.

How to get there

Fuerteventura can be reached in 2 different ways:

Boat
From the islands Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Tenerife daily ferries depart to Fuerteventura. Almost all of them arrive at Puerto del Rosario. The 2 most important operators are Navier Armas and Fred Olsen.

Airplane
On the small airport of Fuerteventura near Puerto de Rosario flights arrive daily. Most of the flights are from Gran Canaria or Tenerife.

Stay

Fuerteventura offers different kinds of accommodations. The cheapest accommodations start approximately € 30,- per night. At the more touristic locations you will find the more luxurious accommodations and these types of stay can get very expensive. So it is possible to stay on Fuerteventura for every kind of budget.
