El Hierro is the most Southern island of the Canary Islands and in the time of Christopher Columbus it was seen as the end of the world. With a surface of 105 sq mi El Hierro is the smallest populated island of the Canary Islands. Most people on El Hierro live in the capital Valverde. El Hierro is a volcanic island and in 2000 the island was added to the Man and the Biosphere Program by Unesco to preserve the flora and fauna on the island. El Hierro is not very touristic but it is perfect for people who like to walk and enjoy the nature. The Nature on El Hierro is unspoiled with steep mountains, volcanic landscapes and forests covered in mist. One of the most populair sights is Roque de la Bonanza. There are also a lot of viewpoints on El Hierro as for example Mirador de Isora and Mirador de Bascos where you can have lunch and enjoy the view. The fog on El Hierro results in a lower temperature on average compared to the other islands of the Canary Islands. You don’t have to expect beautiful white sand beaches on El Hierro. The majority of the coastline consists of rocks.

Santuario de Nuestra Senora de la Virgen de los Reyes

The white church Santuario de Nuestra Senora de la Virgen de los Reyes is located Southwest of Sabinosa in Frontera on the western part of El Hierro. This church is really easy to spot because of the green and mountainous surroundings of the white Santuario de Nuestra Senora de la Virgen de los Reyes. Once every four years there’s a festivity called La Bajada. Santuario de Nuestra Senora de la Virgen de los Reyes is the starting point of the procession in which the population takes a statue of Mary the Blessed Virgin to Valverde by foot as a sign of gratitude for the rain in the past four years.

Iglesia Santa Maria de la Concepcion

The build of the church Iglesia Santa Maria de la Concepcion was finalized in 1767. The Iglesia Santa Maria de la Concepcion is located at the center of the capital of El Hierro. The bell tower of the Iglesia Santa Maria de la Concepcion rises above the surrounding buildings which makes it easy to locate. Inside the church you will see several objects which are made in Barok style.

At the museum Centro Etnografico it is possible to see how different traditional handycrafts on El Hierro are executed. There are four different rooms which are all focused on different handycrafts. At the Centro Etnografico it is possible to see forging, textile weavers and woodworkers / carpenters. The museum is located in the capital of El Hierro, Valverde.

The local government has asked Unesco to place Los Letreros de El Julan on the world heritage list.

El Golfo

The coastline El Golfo is located near Frontera on the Southwestern part of El Hierro. This coastline is created approximately 50,000 years ago when a third of the island plunged in to the sea due to an earthquake. This resulted in a tidal wave which even reached the United Stated of America. Now it is an area with beautiful unspoiled nature with cliffs, some have a height of 3,300 ft.

The forest El Pinar is located South of Frontera on the Southern part of El Hierro. Because it is located near de center of El Hierro it is an ideal location to start your hiking tour on the island. El Pinar mainly consists of pine trees. At El Pinar you will also find the highest point of the island named Malpaso.

Roque de la Bonanza

The rockformation Roque de la Bonanza is located at the East coast of El Hierro. Roque de la Bonanza is a rock which is very important to the local population. When you go to El Hierro by boat you will be able to see it from a great distance. The rocks have a height of approximately 650 ft. At Roque de la Bonanze you will find beaches of red sand, natural pools and rocky beaches.

Activities

On El Hierro the most activities are based on nature. For example you can book excursions to the sea preservation Mar de las Calmas or walk in the unspoiled nature of El Hierro with beautiful rocky beaches and forests. Besides that the sea of El Hierro is very suitable for activities as sailing and diving. The sea around El Hierro can be very rough and the winds can be very strong.

Entertainment and Nightlife

El Hierro doesn’t have a very vibrant nightlife. The best places to go are Las Puntas, Valverde and Frontera. The most accommodations are small and characteristic. The capital of El Hierro, Valverde, has a nightclub. In general the nightlife accommodations on El Hierro are quiet especially when compared to the nightlife on other islands of the Canary Islands as Gran Canaria or Tenerife.

How to get there

El Hierro can be reached in two ways:

Airplane
If you want to go to El Hierro you will probably first fly to Tenerife. From Tenerife you will fly to El Hierro. This flight will take approximately a little under an hour.

Boat
From Tenerife you can reach El Hierrro by boat by using two different companies; Naviera Armas and Fred Olsen. Besides these options it possible to rent a boat and sail to El Hierro on your own. If you rent a boat you have to keep in mind the sea can be rough and the winds can be strong.

Stay

Once every 4 years on the first Saturday of July a big festivity called La Bajada is organized. During this weekend is close to impossible to find any accommodation to stay. If you go to El Hierro during this festival we recommend you to make your reservations in advance.

On El Hierro are multiple types of stay possible from large and luxurious hotels to small cottages in the nature. El Hierro also claims to have the smallest hotel in the world. This hotel is located on a cliff with a beautiful view on sea. If you would like to go to El Hierro we recommend you to make reservation in advance. Allthough El Hierro isn’t very touristic and popular as holiday location it has gained in popularity the past years.
