Nusa Penida, Crystal Bay - Bali


Nusa Penida is an island of 75 sq mi where approximately 50,000 people live located Southeast of Bali. Nusa Penida is especially known for the unspoiled nature. However, the infrastructure on the island is far from perfect. Therefor the most used mode of transport is the motorbike. You can rent one for approximately Rp 100,000 per day. Nusa Penida is also very popular amongst divers. In this region you will find several dive spots as for example Crystal Bay, Manta point and Suana Bay.

Crystal Bay

Location : 8 from City Center - 20 minutes drive | Category : Sea and beach

Crystal Bay is a beautiful white sand beach West of the village Sakti. The beach isn’t crowded which makes it ideal for relaxing or having a picknick. The sea at Crystal Bay is calm and the water is clear, which makes it perfect for diving and snorkeling.

Pura Dalem Ped

Pura Dalem Ped is also known as Pura Penataran Agung Ped. It’s a very important temple for the Hindus on the island. Many Hindus go on pilgrimage to this temple to pray for health and protection against diseases and death. Besides that it is also the most famous temple on the island. Pura Dalem Ped has become a true landmark.

Pura Puncak Mundi

Pura Puncal Mundi is a temple near Klumbu. The temple is located on the top of a hill at a height of 0.3 mile. From the temple you will have a magnificent view on Nusa Penida. Monkeys live at this temple and on a regular basis ceremonies are being held. The hill is also used for the generation of alternative energy by means of wind turbines and solar panels.

South Coast

The entire South Coast of Nusa Penida consists of high white limestone rockery. It’s hard to reach this coastline. The roads leading to the coast are very bad and narrow. But once you’ve arrived at the South Coast you will find it worth the effort. The nature is unspoiled and alongside the coastline you will find many viewpoints with beautiful scenery.

Goa Karang Sari

Goa Karang Sari is also known as Karangsari Cave. Goa Karang Sari is a limestone cave with great cultural value for the locals. To reach the cave you have to climb a little. In the cave you will see beautiful stalactites and other rockformations.

FNPF Bird Sanctuary

Location : 6 mi from City Center - 15 minutes drive | Category : Nature

The FNPF Bird Sanctuary is a preservation and park near Ped. The sanctuary is an initiative of the Friends of the National Park Foundation and the Indonesian government. Especially the preservation of the with extinction threatened Bali Starling is important to the park. Besides the preservation also the education of the locals is very important to the park.


Diving and Snorkeling
The waters surrounding Nusa Penida are clear and generally pretty calm. In this region are more ten 20 good divespots where you can see all kinds of sealife. A few popular locations in the vicinity of Nusa Penida are Crystal Bay, Manta Point and Suana Bay. At the many locations you can encounter for example reefsharks, hammerheads and whalesharks.

In the waters surrounding Nusa Penida you can fish many different kind of fish. You can book these fishing excursions at several locations on Nusa Penida. During these excursions you can for example fish for mackerel, tuna and marlins.

Nusa Penida ideal for birdwatching. On Nusa Penida you will find some very rare tropical bird species. This is mainly possible thanks to FNPF who protect the with extinction threatened species.

Entertainment and Nightlife

On Nusa Penida there is actually no nightlife nor restaurants. There are a number of local eateries but the Western kitchen is not represented.

How to get there

Nusa Penida can be reached by boat from two locations on Bali, Sanur and Padang Bai

From Sanur you can take a speedboat from 2 different operators; Caspla Bali Boat and Maruti Express. These boats depart twice or three times per day to Nusa Penida and a crossing will cost approximately Rp 250,000.

Padang Bai
This operator has two options to reach Nusa Penida. The first option is the daily ferry which will cost approximately Rp 16,000. The second option is the smaller boat which has room for 20 people. This boat departs in the early morning.

The boat leaves when it’s full. A ticket will cost around Rp 40,000.


Nusa Penida has no hotels. The most accommodations are the so called homestays. The only accommodation which offers some kind of luxury is the Ring Sameton Inn. Here you can rent a room with airco, tv and a bathroom with hot and cold water. Other accommodations only provide the basic needs and aren’t suited for person who are looking for luxury and comfort. For birdwatchers we recommend a stay at the FNPF park. The park offers small Bamboo huts where you can spend the night.
