Candidasa is a small fishing village on the Eastern part of Bali 40 miles from the airport at Denpasar and 3.5 miles West of Bugbug. During the 70s tourism grown exponentially and more and more hotels and resorts were build in Candidasa. Most people come to Candidasa for the rest and relaxation which Candidasa has to offer in contrast to for example Kuta. Although Candidasa hasn’t got a lot of beaches it still has to offer a lot. In the near vicinity are a lot of beautiful temples and other cultural sites. For example it’s possible to visit the temple Goa Lawah or the village Bali Aga. Besides this the region of Candidasa is very suitable for diving and snorkeling.

Tenganan is a traditional Balinese village. This is where the Bali Aga life. In this village you can see how these people life and work. The entire village is surrounded by a brick wall. The most important part within these walls is the Bali Agung Pavilion. This is where the elders get together to discuss al kinds of mathers. Another ritual in this village is the so called Mekare Kare. During this ritual two young man attack eachother with leaves from Aloe Vera and protect themselves with reedy shields. The person who bleeds first loses. This ritual takes place at important temple ceremonies

Tulamben is a small fishing village on the Eastern part of Bali. The beach of this village mostly consists of rocks. This makes it less suitable for sunbathing. Nearby Tulamben is the sunken warship Liberty which is a perfect location for scuba diving. The best time to dive here is in the months October and November. At this location you can encounter (amongst others) walesharks and blacktip sharks.

Tirta Gangga is a village known for its waterpalace. The name Tirta Gangga literally means “Water of the Ganges”. The waterpalace has been build in 1946 and consists of many ponds and fountains. These ponds and fountains are located in a beautiful landscaped garden with many statues. The rivers can be crossed by small stone bridges which are decorated richly. In 1963 Tirta Gangga was almost completly destroyed by the eruption of the volcano Gunung Agung. Since then the park has been renovated beautiful.

Goa Lawah is also known as the Bat Cave. Goa Lawah is one of the most important temples on Bali. This temples function is to protect the island from evil spirits from sea. The name Bat Cave is because of the many bats which live in the cave. When the bats leave Goa Lawah at night it’s a true spectacle. The bats leave the cave in a long string of hunderds of bats at once.
Pura Ulun Danau Batur

Pura Ulun Danau Batur is a Hinduistic temple complex in the village Batur. It is the second most important temple on Bali. Pura Ulun Danau Batur has been build in 1926 for worship of the god of Lake Batur named Dewi Danau. At the complex are 9 temples with approximately 285 locations for worship.
Puri Agung Karangasem

Puri Agung Karangasem is a palace which has been build in the 19th century by Anak Agung Gede Jelantik. The palace is build in three different styles Balinese, Chinese and European. On the premisses of Puri Agung Karangasem is a building called Maskerdam. This is a reference to Amsterdam. The king of Karangasem gave the name to this building because of the new and good political relationship he had with the Netherlands.
Pantai Labuan Amok

Pantai Labuan Amok is a black sand beach. Although Candidasa has little to offer when it concerns beaches this beach is most certainly worth a visit. The beach is pretty quiet and the sea is shallow and the water is clear which makes it ideal for snorkling. This also makes Pantai Labuan Amok an ideaal location for relaxing and enjoying the nature.
Diving / Snorkeling
Candidasa is ideal to use as a base for diving holidays. In Candidasa it’s possible to take diving lessons and book excursions to for example the islands of Nusa Penida. There you can visit the House reef or the sunken warship Liberty. It’s also possible to spot Whalesharks and blacktip reef shark in the sea near Candidasa
In the vicinity of Candidasa is a lot of beautiful nature where you can go for a walk. At the hotels in Candidasa it’s almost always possible to book guides who know all the best and most interesting locations of Candidasa and its surroundings. If you are a more experienced hiker mount Agung is a nice challenge. The hike takes about 6 hours and it’s recommended to take a guide with you.
Entertainment and Nightlife
Candidasa is mainly known for the delicious fish and traditional Balinese dishes which you can order at many restaurants. On the boulevard are many restaurants where you can enjoy these dishes and have a magnificient view on the sea of Candidasa. For those who don’t want to enjoy the local cuisine there are many restaurants where you can order western or chinese dishes.
Candidasa doesn’t have a vibrant nightlife. At the center of Candidasa are many bars where you can go for a drink at night. These bars are mainly focussed on tourism and don’t have live music.
How to get there
Car – Taxi
A trip from the airport to Candidasa is about 40 miles and takes 1 hour and 15 minutes. There is a road which follows the Eastcoast which connects Candidasa to Denpasar. The price of a taxi will be around Rp 350.000 – Rp 400.000.
Candidasa is easily accessible from Denpasar by shuttle bus. The biggest operating company is Perama. They have daily roundtrips between Candidasa and Denpasar. If you want to use their services you have to at least book 1 day in advance. The trip takes about 90 minutes and the costs are approx. Rp 70.000 for a oneway ticket.
A Bemo is a typical Indonesian kind of transportation which you won’t find somewhere else. In essence it’s a minivan without doors. This type of transportation is mainly used by the locals. So if you use the Bemo you most certainly will get in contact with locals. The Bemo’s depart from Batubulan terminal at the airport and drive to Candidasa. The big disadvantage of the Bemo is that they will stop for everybody who wants to travel by Bemo.
In Candidasa are many types of accomodations available.
In Candidasa are many lowbudget accommodations available. Airco and warm water are not always available and it is possible you have to share the toilets and bathroom with other guests. In some cases a small restaurant is on the premises where you can have meals at low cost. These accomodations in Candidasa are priced between Rp 150,000 – Rp 200,000 per night.
The middle class hotels and accommodations in Candidasa can mostly be found at the beach. In many cases these hotels have swimmingpools and restaurants. The prices of these accommodations are between Rp 250,000 – Rp 1,000,000 per night.
Luxurious accommodations can be found in Candidasa as well. These hotels and resorts have everything you could wish for. On the premises you will find restaurants, spas and swimmingpools. At some accommodations it’s even possible to taking cooking courses in the kitchen of the hotel/resort. The prices of these accommodations start at Rp 1,000,000 per night and can get very high very fast depending on the required luxury and demands.
